Effects of perceptions of the learning environment and approaches to learning on Chinese undergraduates’ learning

•74,687 Chinese undergraduates responded to four self-constructed scales.•Factorial structures of inventories were different from existing inventories.•Learning approaches mediated the relation between learning experience and outcomes.•Interpersonal interaction strongly predicted learning approaches and outcomes.•Good teaching positively predicted deep and surface approaches.
