摘要
Laryngospasm is a complication that can happen to all patients undergoing anesthesia, but it is more common in infants and small children, patients with upper airway infections and those undergoing surgery in the mouth or larynx, and patients who are obese. Stimulation of the larynx can cause the vocal cords to close and prevent ventilation. This can occur both during induction of general anesthesia and upon emerging from anesthesia. Anesthesiologists must therefore always be prepared to open the airway, including using skeletal muscle relaxants if necessary to provide oxygenation, ventilation, and prevent the serious complications that may result from untreated laryngospasm.
