Self-Assembly for therapy: Phthalocyanine nanostructures

Significance Development of cationic phthalocyanine able to form nanostructured objects with photobiological and phototherapeutic activity for cancer and infections. Approach Bacterial and cancerous cell cultures are incubated with the compounds and applied a defined irradiation for later evaluation of photo-killing efficiency. Results We demonstrate that the compounds are red-light photoactive and there is evidence of mortality in both cell cultures, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell culture. Conclusions Continued development of surfactant-free nano-aggregation will help to solve the problematics of drug delivery to go through different interfaces.
