Abstract
The world population is everincreasing and demands a lot more production than today to feed the globe. Besides, numerous health hazards are causing a large number of deaths all over the globe. One other factor of concern is the soaring environmental pollution caused by rapid industrialization. Though extensive efforts have been made to combat against these issues, the outcome is still far less than the need. It is of utmost importance to identify, characterize and ultimately manipulate genes involved in biological pathways to deal with these dilemmas. Deliberate alteration in the genetic material of any organism by direct modification of the nucleic acid is referred to gene manipulation or gene cloning or genetic engineering and is achieved by numerous techniques collectively termed as recombinant DNA technology. Recombinant DNA technology offers us with a set of techniques to accomplish this aim. This chapter describes the basic techniques of recombinant DNA technology and focuses on its applications in the modern day
