Crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) distribution cables are widely used in distribution power networks, and their insulation performance affects power supply reliability directly. Broadband impedance spectroscopy (BIS) has been proved to be an effective technique for detecting cable insulation defects, however, the longer aging segments and shorter defects coexisted in XLPE distribution cables in operation could not be distinguished effectively based on existing research, imposing large restrictions on the status diagnosis and evaluation for cables. This paper was just devoted to solve the above technical problem. A novel localization method for aging segments and short defects in XLPE distribution cables was proposed through simulation research based on BIS and the integral transform technique. And the curve features for defect identification could be summarized and obtained. Finally the validity of the localization technique proposed was further confirmed through experiments. The research results of this paper are of great significance for the resilience enhancement of distribution power network.
