Abstract
Aim: To assess oral signs, symptoms, and oral lesions in patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis and compare them with age- and sex-matched individuals. Material and Method: Study group consisted of 150 patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) examined before dialysis. The control group consisted of 150 age- and sex-matched healthy patients visiting dental OPD. A full oral examination was performed for these patients, and signs, symptoms, and oral lesions were recorded. Results: Oral symptoms/signs most commonly seen in CKD patients were pale oral mucosa (81.3%), uremic or unpleasant oral odor (78%), and xerostomia (70%). Most common oral lesion was a coated tongue (51.3%) followed by dry fissured lips (33.3%). Conclusion: Prevalence of signs, symptoms, and oral lesions was high in CKD patients undergoing dialysis, and thus, intervention is required for such individuals.
