Feasibility analysis of photovoltaic systems for kiwifruit irrigation: A case study in Shaanxi province, China

Abstract
Although photovoltaic (PV) irrigation systems are widely used in China, feasibility assessment of these systems is important because of differences in the distribution characteristics of solar resources and crops. In this study, kiwifruit planting in Shaanxi province was considered, and a calculation model for PV irrigation system evaluation was developed. Based on the geographical distribution of kiwifruit planting, as well as the spatial and temporal distributions of solar energy in Shaanxi province, the application potential of PV irrigation for kiwifruit was investigated comprehensively from the perspectives of technology, economy and irrigation feasibility. The results showed that the proportion of the PV module scale to the irrigation scale in all the kiwifruit planting areas in Shaanxi province was far less than 1.5%, and there were no technical obstacles. In Baoji, Weinan, Hanzhong and Ankang, the annual cost of the PV irrigation system was greater than that of the diesel pump irrigation system. Regarding irrigation feasibility, farmlands with a slope of 0%-8.75% were considered highly suitable for installing a PV irrigation system. The results revealed 32,269 ha of farmland appropriate for PV irrigation among the 66,371 ha of kiwifruit in Shaanxi province. Bien que les systemes d'irrigation photovoltaiques (PV) soient largement utilises en Chine, l'evaluation de la faisabilite de ces systemes est importante en raison des differences qui existent dans les caracteristiques de distribution des ressources solaires et des cultures. Dans cette etude, la plantation de kiwi dans la Province du Shaanxi a ete prise en compte et un modele de calcul pour l'evaluation du systeme d'irrigation photovoltaique a ete elabore. En se basant sur la distribution geographique des plantations de kiwi, ainsi que sur les distributions spatiales et temporelles de l'energie solaire dans la Province du Shaanxi, le potentiel d'application de l'irrigation photovoltaique pour les kiwi a ete etudie de maniere approfondie du point de vue de la technologie, de l'economie et de la faisabilite de l'irrigation. Les resultats ont montre que la proportion de l'echelle du module photovoltaique par rapport a l'echelle d'irrigation dans toutes les zones de plantation de kiwi dans la Province du Shaanxi etait bien inferieure a 1,5%, et qu'il n'y avait aucun obstacle technique. A Baoji, Weinan, Hanzhong et Ankang, le cout annuel du systeme d'irrigation photovoltaique etait plus eleve que celui du systeme d'irrigation a pompe diesel. En ce qui concerne la faisabilite de l'irrigation, les terres agricoles ayant une pente de 0-8,75% ont ete considerees comme tres appropriees pour l'installation d'un systeme d'irrigation photovoltaique. Les resultats ont revele 32 269 hectares de terres agricoles appropriees pour l'irrigation photovoltaique sur les 66 371 hectares de kiwi dans la Province du Shaanxi.
