Abstract
The article analyzes the translation strategies employed in the book The Unedited Diaries of Carolina Maria de Jesus (Levine; Meihy, 1999). The methodology used is the comparative analysis between the text in Portuguese and the text translated into English, according to the understanding of the theories of Cultural Studies and Translation. The results indicate an attempt at a translation faithful to the original, however, the translation aporias demand multiple choices that manipulate the text according to the target readership. As conclusion that translating is rewriting, however, this action can be positive or negative depending on the goals of the editors and translators, as it would invent two cultures that will or will not be transposed.
