Abstract
Using a statistical linear response theory, we present a complex phase structure describing ionic conduction through a nanopore as a function of pore structure. This picture sheds light on the permeation mechanism, and selectivity between ions of alike and differing charge; and is calculated explicitly from first principles via the statistical properties including particle number fluctuations. We therefore expect the theory to be applicable to the functionalisation and design of highly selective nanopores.
