The Holographic Interference Surface (HIS) is a promising technology for building a more cost-effective wireless communication architecture. In this paper, we derive the holographic interference principles for the transceiving of wireless signals and establish a novel channel estimation architecture. The proposed architecture relies on interfering the object waves with a pre-designed reference wave, and therefore reduces the hardware complexity and requires less time-frequency resources. To reduce interference in the communication hologram, we propose a phase shifting-based interference suppression (PSIS) method by exploiting the structural characteristics of the hologram. With the denoised hologram, a Prony-based multi-user channel segmentation (PMCS) algorithm is proposed to estimate the multi-user channel state information (CSI). Our theoretical analysis shows that the estimation error of the proposed algorithm converges to zero as the number of holographic interference surface units increases. Simulation results show that the CSI can be accurately estimated by our proposed interference principle-based channel sensing method.
