A Novel 1/2-Bit Reconfigurable Reflectarray element for Multi-Polarization Operations

This paper introduces an innovative multi-polarized 1/2-bit reconfigurable reflectarray element. The proposed element offers the ability to achieve precise phase quantization of 1-bit and 2-bit for circularly and linearly polarized incident waves, respectively. To enable this functionality, the element integrates six PIN diodes onto the phase delay lines of the reflective patch. These diodes can be controlled using voltage, allowing them to switch between an “ON” and “OFF” state. Numerical simulations conducted on the proposed element demonstrate its remarkable performance. It achieves a high-resolution 2-bit phase response, with a phase difference of 90° and a reflection loss of less than 2dB for linearly polarized waves. Additionally, the element exhibits precise 1-bit phase quantization for circularly polarized incident waves, with a phase error of less than 25°.
