Biophotovoltaic energy sources based on photosynthetic organisms, e.g., cyanobacteria, capable of converting solar energy into electrical energy are considered. The use of the photosynthesis process as a renewable energy source for generating electrical energy is seen as a replacement for fossil fuels. The study evaluates a biofuel cell based on Synechococcus fabricated with different types of carbon electrodes. The design of a single-chamber cell with a proton-exchange membrane is developed. The demonstrated battery achieves a power density 10.3 mW/m2.
