Research Progress of Identity Management Based on Blockchain Technology

Identity management technologies can help organizations ensure that only authorized users have access to systems and data. However, traditional identity management solutions rely too much on central servers, which are prone to single point of failure and privacy leaks. Therefore, blockchain technology has attracted widespread attention due to its characteristics of decentralization and high reliability. Applying blockchain technology to identity management can effectively reduce or even eliminate excessive reliance on third parties in traditional identity management mechanisms. This paper first analyzes the structural characteristics of blockchain and the distributed characteristics of decentralization, and then discusses the latest research on identity management based on blockchain from two aspects of identity authentication and privacy protection. Moreover, the latest application progress of blockchain-based identity management (BlockIDM) is analyzed. Finally, this paper proposes several challenges and future research directions in this research field.
