Abstract
Heteromorph ammonites of the genus Parapatoceras SPATH, 1924 are described herein for the first time from Algeria (northwestern Africa), from the lower Callovian Kheneg Formation exposed in the El Bayadh area, central Saharan Atlas. This is also the second record from the African continent of Parapatoceras cf. tuberculatum (BAUGIER & SAUZA); the previous record figured as Parapatoceras pinatum (BAUGIER & SAUZA) by COLLIGNON from the lower Callovian of Madagascar, is herein considered as P. tuberculatum. The occurrence of Parapatoceras in Algeria probably coincides with the lower Callovian sea level highstand, JCa2, and supports the previously suggested link between their widespread occurrence and rising sea levels.
