Development of a Data Transmission Security System on a Mobile Smart Trash Bin Using an Elliptic Curve Cryptography Algorithm

The Internet of Things requires data transmission to exchange information, transmit data, and carry out various functions. However, data transmission involving these communication protocols is still vulnerable to attack. One of the protocols that is still vulnerable to attacks is the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol. This protocol is vulnerable to Man In The Middle (MITM) attacks which attack packet data that will be sent between the device and the server. Therefore, a method of securing data transmission is needed on the Internet of Things system. This research creates a data transmission security system for Mobile Smart Trash Bin device communication using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) secured by Transport Layer Security (TLS) using an asymmetric Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) algorithm. The system is tested by testing functionality, security, performance, and Quality of Service. From the test results, it is known that the system functionality has been running according to design; it can encrypt data communication between the robot and the server; has better throughput, average time, and error rate than without using a VPN; and get the results of a throughput value of 3048 bits/sec, a delay value of 381 ms, a jitter of 381 ms, and 0% packet loss.
