Reconstruction efficiency enhancement of amplitude-type holograms by using Single-Scale Retinex algorithm

A real-value encoding hologram method for loading on amplitude -type spatial light modulator is proposed based on the single-scale retinex algorithm, in which the proportion of the low- and high-frequency components of the hologram can be controlled based on the center surround function. The fringe contrast of the hologram is enhanced by increasing the high-frequency and decreasing the low-frequency components of the hologram, then the diffraction efficiency is further improved. The proposed encoding method increases around 2 times PSNR, 1.8 times SSIM, and 8 times diffraction efficiency to the traditional amplitude -type hologram. The proposed encoding method has a comparable diffraction efficiency and reconstruction quality with the common phaseonly hologram. Such an encoding method can break the monopoly of the phase-only hologram, and it will also promote the application of low-cost, high-refreshing rate amplitude -type spatial light modulator.
