Wave mechanics of microwave absorption in films - Distinguishing film from material

Abstract
This research introduces novel functions to clarify that film absorption does not stem from the attenuation properties of the material within the film. These newly devised functions, by comparing the attenuation characteristics of materials along the zig-zag optical path of microwaves within films, serve to emphasize the critical distinction between the film and its constituent materials. This differentiation between film and material is of crucial importance since treating them as equivalent has given rise to several unresolved problems in current theory. These include the misinterpretation of results derived from transmission line theory and the development of the inaccurate impedance matching theory caused by neglecting to take account of changes in the properties of a film interface compared to an isolated interface. Furthermore, the flawed quarter-wavelength theory has emerged due to the neglect of phase effects from the two parallel interfaces of the film, and the wrong microwave absorption mechanism for film has been developed based on the attenuation power of material. In this work we show how all these errors can be corrected by using wave mechanics.
