Abstract
Studies have suggested that La Cienega Valley has been a palimpsest of human activity over at least 2,500 years. The valley was most intensively occupied during the first millennium AD. However, fewer (but not less important) occupations have also been recorded between the Regional Developments Period and the present. This paper aims to present the results of systematic archaeological surveys and mappings of the valley and to analyze landscapes, relations, tensions, and change processes over the long term. It focuses particularly on social scales and everyday life in the early villager societies that occupied the area during the first millennium AD.
