Reaction of the [B 10 H 11 ] – Anion with Phenanthrene-1,10-Dicarbonitriles

In this study, the reaction of the [B 10 H 11 ] – anion with phenanthrene-9,10-dicarbonitriles containing various substituents has been studied. A series of new mono- and disubstituted nitrile derivatives of the closo -decaborate anion have been obtained, and the structures of the target products of mono- and disubstitution of general composition [B 10 H 9 NCR] – and [(B 10 H 9 NC) 2 R] 2– (where R is phenanthrene containing substituents in positions 1 and 10) have been determined. Along with the formation of the target product, a series of unexpected side reactions associated with the protonation of the polyaromatic systems by the [B 10 H 11 ] – anion have been revealed. The structures and compositions of the products have been determined using 1 H, 11 B, 13 C NMR spectroscopies and mass spectrometry.
