Comparative Study on the Effect of PMSM Scaling Choices on Electric Vehicle Energy Consumption

This paper examines the impact of two scaling choices of PMSM on energy consumption in electric vehicles. Scaling choices based on maintaining magnetic field density and preserving temperature rise are herein investigated. For each scaling choice, the scaling laws of the power loss are derived and analyzed. Although the difference in terms of power loss scaling, simulation results at system-level, for different scaled designs with a power scaling factor of 1.375 and driving cycles, indicate an average difference in terms of energy consumption of less than 0.5% between the two scaling choices. The outcome of the study suggests that, for the study case examined, the scaling choice has an insignificant effect on energy consumption.
