•Residual fatigue life prediction models are created by using neural networks.•FEM and Monte Carlo methods are used to generate data to train the neural networks.•Eighteen neural network configurations are compared to determine the best one.•Neural networks can be used for life predictions in real-time and under uncertainty.•High accuracy and low degradation is highlighted for the best configurations.
