•A biodegradable curcumin-ferrum (Cur-Fe) nanoflower was self-assembled on Mg alloy.•Cur-Fe nanoflower exhibits remarkable narrow gap semiconductor characteristics.•Cur-Fe nanoflower could gradually degrade and transform into anti-corrosive FeOOH.•Cur-Fe nanoflower demonstrated excellent antibacterial and antitumor effects.•Cur-Fe nanoflower-engineered Mg alloy showed great osteogenesis activity.
