•W18O49/PAM-PNIPAM hybrid hydrogel was prepared by in-situ polymerization.•W18O49/PAM-PNIPAM exhibits photothermal and photo-thermochromic properties.•The photothermal effect of W18O49can trigger the thermochromism of PNIPAM.•Complete IR transmission shielding caused by the photochromic effect of W18O49.
