•Construction of NZVI into MXene boosted reduction reactivity towards ReO4−.•XRD and XPS analyses confirmed formation of ReO2 was major reduction products.•The combined adsorption, reduction and precipitation led to ReO4− sequestration.•The as-constructed MXene/NZVI were better sequestrator in purifying ReO4−/TcO4−.
