•Celastrol promoted the recovery of spinal cord tissue and motor function in SCI rats.•Celastrol significantly inhibited ferroptosis in neurons and oligodendrocytes in vitro and in vivo.•Celastrol could inhibit ferroptosis by up-regulating the Nrf2-xCT-GPX4 pathway to repair spinal cord injury.
