Abstract
•This is the first detailed study of total Hg in US road sediment.•A range of Hg concentrations between 1.49 to 28.48 µg/kg occur.•Hg concentrations maps indicate a coal plant is the source.•Evidence for coal pollution in road sediment exists.•The study provides constraints for future Hg budget investigations.
