Comprehensive evaluation of environmental flows in the Yangtze River regulated by two large dams

•The hydrologic regimes of the Yangtze River was investigated using environmental flow components.•The river flows became homogenous after dam construction and had strong impacts on aquatic ecosystems.•Environmental flow recommendations are urgently needed to alleviate the hydrologic alteration and minimize the negative ecological influence.
