Surface roughness prediction of magnesium aluminum spinel in single-point oblique axis ultra-precision grinding

Magnesium aluminum spinel is an important hard and brittle material widely used in the optical communication and information imaging fields. Due to its high mechanical hardness, grinding is the main surface processing method of magnesium aluminum spinel. In this paper, the surface morphology of magnesium aluminum spinel in the ultra-precision grinding are revealed. The equivalent grinding thickness model in the ultra-precision grinding process is derived. Then a theoretical surface roughness prediction model of magnesium aluminum spinel in grinding is established, the errors between the predicted and experimental results are within 10%. Finally, the ultra-precision grinding process parameters of magnesium aluminum spinel are optimized by the modified particle swarm optimization algorithm. The optimized ultra-precision grinding process parameters are obtained as ns = 24000r/min, f = 0.16 m/min, ap = 1 μm, d = 2 μm.
