•CaO2-freezing co-pretreatment promoted SCFAs yields from WAS.•RSM analysis recommended the best co-pretreatment conditions.•The maximum cumulative yield of SCFAs was 162.34 mg COD/g VSS.•Longer sludge retention time promotes methane production.•SCFAs accumulation, Ca2+, and freezing were positively correlated.
