•The electronic structure of Pt is modulated by CePO4 due to the metal-support interaction.•The CePO4 support has strong adsorption capacity of substrate.•The support plays a role as new active sites under hydrogen spillover.•CePO4/Pt catalyst exhibits a high TOF value up to 1476 h-1 in hydrogenation of nitroarenes.
