Pain-sensorimotor interactions: New perspectives and a new model

•Despite several theories, pain-sensorimotor interactions are still poorly understood.•This review identifies a wide range of factors bearing on pain-sensorimotor interactions.•A new more comprehensive theory of pain-sensorimotor interactions is proposed here.•This theory takes account of biological, psychological, and social factors.•The theory points to customized management of sensorimotor functions impacted by pain.
