•The Trop-2 protein exhibits high expression in all subtypes of thymic epithelial tumors compared to the normal thymus making it a promising therapeutic target.•Trop-2 expression is not an independent prognostic marker in thymic epithelial tumors.•GLUT-1 is highly expressed in thymic carcinoma and it can be used for distinguishing carcinoma from thymoma.
