Suicidal ideation, non-suicidal self-injury and psychopathology in university students: Examining the moderating role of experiential avoidance

•Past non-suicidal self-injuries and past suicidal ideation were strongly associated with recent suicidal ideation, even over and above current psychiatric symptoms.•Experiential avoidance moderated the association between psychiatric symptoms and recent suicide ideation.•Anxiety symptoms and life stress were associated with increased risk of recent suicide ideation in students with low experiential avoidance, compared to those with high experiential avoidance.
