•SnS2/Bi2MoO6-x has been successfully synthesized with enhanced photoactivity.•SBMO-5 exhibited superior TC removal and mineralization performance.•The unique Z-scheme charge transfer channel promoted the separation of e− – h+.•Exploration of degradation pathways and toxicity assessment was conducted.
