•Resident alveolar macrophages (RAMs) played a pivotal role in resolving inflammation during LPS and/or E.coli-induced ARDS.•RvD1 enhanced the resolution of inflammation by promoting RAM self-renewal and phagocytosis in an ALX/MAPK14/S100A8/A9-dependent manner.•Plasma levels of RvD1 in sepsis-induced ARDS patients were negatively correlated with plasma S100A8/A9 levels, and were associated with the outcome of sepsis-induced ARDS.
