•H2 generation from aqueous-phase reforming of CH3OH at < 60 °C by Pt/PN-CeO2.•Oxygen vacancies enhance the electronic density of Pt to promote CH3OH activation.•Oxygen vacancies could further promote the H2O activation.•The activity of Pt/PN-CeO2 is comparative to that of homogeneous catalysts.
