•Co9S8 hexagonal sheets are synthesized via a self-templating approach.•An SRS growth mechanism is proposed based on Kirkendall effect.•The product shows excellent photocatalytic performance for degrading RhB.•The ∙OH radical plays a vital role in this Fenton-like system.
