Severe disability and self-reported depression and anxiety among persons living with Type 2 diabetes in Canada

•The prevalence of self-reported depression and anxiety among persons living with Type 2 diabetes in Canada was 12.4% and 10.1% respectively.•Severe disability was reported by 21% of those living with Type 2 diabetes.•Severe disability was significantly associated with both depression and anxiety disorders.•Dissatisfaction with life, extremely stressful life events, being single, female sex, obesity, poor self-rated health, and current smoking status were significant risk factors for both mental health disorders.•Increasing age and higher income status were significant protective factors for depression and anxiety among those living with Type 2 diabetes in Canada.
