Abstract
Conventional grid following (GFL) converters suffer from instability in renewable energy-dominated power systems, while the emerging grid forming (GFM) converters possess weak fault ride-through capability under grid faults. To cope with the problems, this paper proposes a novel superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) based hybrid GFL and GFM converter architecture for the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), to enhance the power system stability both under steady state and transient state. The SMES is connected to the DC bus of the PMSG, and an additional inverter and transformer are added to provide GFM capability during regular operation and enhance FRT capability when grid faults occur. Simulation results verify the proposed architecture and demonstrate its superiority.
