S.O.S. – Save our supplies: Understanding reasons to tackle the challenge of wasted returned blood products

•Packed red cells were the most common component returned back as well as discarded.•Wards followed by High dependancy units/Intensive care units comprised the major hospital locations responsible for returned blood components.•82.1% of all return instances were presumably avoidable which would reduce logistics associated with movement of blood components outside controlled temperature storage conditions.
