•CeO2-V2O5/rGO tertiary heterojunction creates both O2− and HO by visible light.•Synergic effects between individuals slow down recombination rate of electrons-holes.•Most of the cefotaxime antibiotic were mineralized to CO2 and H2O.•Photocatalytic performance of CeO2-V2O5/rGO system is comparable under visible light and sunlight.•CeO2-V2O5/rGO photocatalyst presents high stability and durability.
