•Natural hematite had excellent photoelectric responsiveness and biocompatibility.•Sunlight-assisted hematite anode significantly enhanced the power output of MFC.•Hematite and P. aeruginosa PAO1 have remarkable electron transfer relationship under irradiation.•Hematite-P. aeruginosa PAO1 anode MFC has great potential for simultaneous reduction of NO3– and Cr(Ⅵ).
