•The dual-height microgroove generates hierarchical transport during capillary rise.•The dynamic mechanism of hierarchical transport is analyzed.•Effect of structural parameters and working liquids on capillary rise were studied.•Picosecond laser has the feasibility in fabrication of wick with complex shape.•Dual-height microgroove reached a maximum capillary parameter of 1.819 μm.
