•THg in soil and tissues of rice plant were investigated from a Ramsar site in India.•THg in soils varied from 0.037 mg/kg to 0.117 mg/kg.•Accumulation pattern of THg in the rice plant: Root > leaf > grain > husk > stem.•Average Bioaccumulation Factor of 0.616.•Average Translocation Factor of 0.425.
