Abstract
The long-term aqueous corrosion behaviour of Fe-Al borosilicate glass-zirconolite (Fe-Al-BG-CaZrTi2O7) glassceramic composite materials results from incongruent and congruent corrosion mechanisms of the individual zirconolite (CaZrTi2O7) and Fe-Al borosilicate glass (Fe-Al-BG) phases after the Fe-Al-BG-CaZrTi2O7 composite materials were exposed to deionised water for 365 days. A comprehensive investigation of the aqueous corrosion resistance and structural stability of Fe-Al-BG-CaZrTi2O7 composite materials has demonstrated that the proposed glass-ceramic composite materials are chemically durable over long-term exposure to water and can be considered as potential alternative hosts to borosilicate glass for the safe and effective disposal of nuclear waste.
