Homogenous dose prescription in Gamma Knife Radiotherapy: Combining the best of both worlds

•The prototype Lightning version generates more homogenous plans than the clinical version.•The Gamma Knife advantage of good dose gradients is maintained.•In-tumor hotspots can be reduced, hence sparing in-tumor critical structures.•The advantages of linear accelerator and Gamma Knife can be combined.
