Biomechanical comparison of two different compression screws for the treatment of odontoid fractures in human dens axis specimen.

•The maximum compression force was significantly higher with Sleeve-nut screw.•Both screw types showed an increase in compressive force and torque with increasing bone density.•Sleeve-nut screws had a threefold higher tolerance to screw tearing.
