Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) that can affect any part of the GIT. The side effects of chemical drugs in the treatment of IBD have led researchers to use natural products owing to their reported efficacy and safety. Among natural products, resveratrol (RES) has been noted as a strong defensive antioxidant in the treatment of IBD. RES is a natural polyphenol found in grapes, red wine, and some types of berries. Studies have shown that RES has an anti-inflammatory effect and improves IBD, however, poor stability, low solubility and bioavailability and also rapid metabolism have reduced its performance. For this purpose, in this review, solutions to overcome these limitations are presented and all articles on colon delivery of RES for the treatment of IBD are also reviewed and criticized.
