Optimization of FACTS Devices for Power System Performance Improvement: A Review

Rapid increase in energy demand has forced the modern distribution and transmission systems to operate close to their maximum capacity. This is associated with numerous technical challenges such as increased power losses, voltage instability, poor power quality, and reduced system reliability. One approach of dealing with these challenges is the use of Flexible Alternating Currents Transmission System (FACTS) devices. However, FACTS devices have high initial costs and optimization of their size, location, and type is of huge importance. Optimization of FACTS devices in power networks is a complex optimization problem that involves the use of different optimization techniques. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the existing literature about different techniques employed to optimize FACTS devices. A comparison of the FACTS optimization methods with the strengths and drawbacks for each optimization technique is presented.
