Traveling Wave Differential Protection Applied to Renewable Energy and Flexible DC Connected Lines

With the rapid consumption of non-renewable energy such as fossil energy, countries around the world are vigorously developing wind, light, geothermal and other renewable energy. Since most of the large-scale renewable energy power stations are located in remote areas, in order to better connect renewable energy to the grid, renewable energy is widely used through the flexible DC connection transmission scheme. The AC line of the renewable energy power station incorporated into the flexible DC double ended converter power supply has new fault characteristics. This paper introduces the application of traveling wave differential protection in this scenario, and uses Euclid distance to characterize the waveform similarity, and adopt normalization method to further optimize the protection performance and protection setting. Finally, the effectiveness of the protection algorithm is verified through simulation.
